چکیده

The radial scale length of the exponential component of the disc of the Milky Way has been determined in the near infrared. We have used the TMGS (Two Micron Galactic Survey) database which contains positions and K-magnitudes of about 700.000 stars distributed in serveral regions along the galactic plane. From those we have selected areas more than 5 off the plane to minimize the effect of extinction and the contributions of the young disc; and with longitudes ranging from 30 to 70, to avoid contaminations from the central bulge, the bar and the molecular ring, in the inner end, and from the local arm, the warp and the truncation of the disc, in the outer end. We observed stars with magnitude 9 ≤ mK ≤ 10. The use of the NIR K-band also reduces the effect of extinction. In the observation region, mK = 9.5 mag stars are K2-K5 III stars, with an absolute magnitude that is nearly constant, which also greatly simplifies the problem. We have obtained the value 2.1± 0.3 kpc for the radial scale length, which is a typical value when compared with external galaxies of similar types.

Galactic kinematics with modified Newtonian dynamics

We look for observational signatures that could discriminate between Newtonian and modified Newtonian (MOND) dynamics in the Milky Way, in view of the advent of large astrometric and spectroscopic surveys. Indeed, a typical signature of MOND is an apparent disk of “phantom” dark matter, which is uniquely correlated with the visible disk-density distribution. Due to this phantom dark disk, Newto...

Population Synthesis in the Galaxy: the Radial Structure of the Stellar Disc

Picture ABSTRACT The Besann con model of population synthesis of the Galaxy has been built as a tool to constrain our knowledge of the Milky Way. It allows to compare predictions of evolution scenarii with photometric and astrometric observations (Robin and Cr ez e, 1986, Bienaym e et al., 1987). This model has been used to determine the scale length of the stellar disc (found to be 2.5 kpc) an...

Coupled Axial-Radial Vibration of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Via Doublet Mechanics

This paper investigates the coupled axial-radial (CAR) vibration of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) based on doublet mechanics (DM) with a scale parameter. Two coupled forth order partial differential equations that govern the CAR vibration of SWCNTs are derived. It is the first time that DM is used to model the CAR vibration of SWCNTs. To obtain the natural frequency and dynamic respon...

Design of Grounding Vertical Rods Buried in Complex Soils using Radial Basis Functions

In this paper, using neural networks based on radial basis functions (RBF), a comprehensive closed-form solution for effective length of vertical grounding rod is extracted in such a way that the two effects of ionization and dispersion are simultaneously considered. In creating the model, training data are computed from multi-conductor transmission line (MTL). As a results, firstly in the prop...

The Distribution of Dark Matter in the Milky Way Galaxy

A wealth of recent observational studies shows the dark matter in the Milky Way to have the following fundamental properties: 1) there is no detectable dark matter associated with the Galactic disk – the dark matter is distributed in a purely halo distribution with local volume density near the Earth ≈ 0.3GeV/cc ≡ 0.01M⊙pc; 2) The stellar mass function is both universal and convergent at low ma...
